At the age of 16 the singer began appearing frequently on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when won the TV talent show. At nightclubs, she began performing at the age of 15. Nancy, then 17, completed high school and was enrolled in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to sing. Nancy made her debut album on Dot Records during the time she spent in this band. Cannonball Adderley encouraged that she should move into New York to further her professional career. She moved to The Big Town to begin her career in 1959. In less than a month she had been singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. The representative of Adderley heard her sing and immediately agreed to sign her. She made her recording debut in 1960 with one single following an agreement with Capitol Records. Guess Who? Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Following the influence of Adderley, Nancy Wilson shifted to R&B to jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley joined forces in 1962 and led to her rise up in the chart. By 1963 she scored the biggest success by releasing Tell Me the Truth.
